The Office of International Affairs (OIA) is pleased to announce the recipients of 2014-2015 OIA Faculty Seed Grant to Invite an International Collaborator to Stanford. To facilitate faculty partnerships with collaborators from developing countries, OIA called for proposals to invite collaborators from a group of countries that were identified as either a least developed country (LDC) by the United Nations or a low to low middle income country (LIC or LMIC) by the World Bank.
Five (5) proposals for up to $10,000 were granted to support travel and a stipend for living expenses (lodging, food, and incidentals) for faculty collaborators for a minimum two-week visit. Four of the selected proposals are from the School of Medicine and one from the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
An example of one of the winning grants was awarded to Professor Alex Macario at the School of Medicine to invite his collaborators from the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences (UZCHS).
This award will support a new milestone in an existing collaboration between the Departments of Anesthesiology at the two institutions. So far in this collaboration, a research initiative utilizing the "flipped classroom" technique, where trainees access videos for content, but classroom time focuses on interactive sessions such as simulation and case-based scenarios, has been completed. The anesthesia residents showed increased feelings of preparedness and increased knowledge of the anesthesia in clinical scenarios involving anesthetic emergencies. However they felt that the relevance and adaptability of the information presented could be improved. Additional needs that were identified include additional curriculum development for regional anesthesia, a simulation lab, and a desire for video lectures covering topics in which they receive limited clinical experience.
Currently, the state the relationship between the two institutions is unbalanced. Clinicians and trainees from Stanford travel to Zimbabwe to offer research mentorship and teaching. Stanford students gain knowledge about delivering care in a vastly different setting but the opposite has not occurred. The opportunity to host Dr. Samson Shumbairerwa, Chair of the Department of Anesthetics and Dr. Farai Madzimbamuto, Chair of Health Professions Sciences will provide them with a research perspective on medical education so they can determine what will work for them and aid the direction of future collaborative efforts in medical education. Familiarization with education techniques used at Stanford will inform them and equip them to steer research studies that optimize the use of available resources to augment the education on UZCHS residents.
As Zimbabwe recovers from economic collapse, physicians that were forced to leave are returning again to fill their roles in society. Physicians are rebuilding training programs and anesthesia at UZCHS is prioritizing medical education research. Impact on UZCHS residents and the future workforce stands to be substantial, as they determine which educational initiatives yield the highest impact.
